Policijski posao je kompleksan i težak. Njegova osnovna odrednica je zaštita društva od različitih oblika ugrožavanja bezbjednosti – kriminaliteta, prekršaja, narušavanja javnog reda i mira (morala) i raznih društveno neprihvatljivih ponašanja i pojava.

U kontekstu te socijalno-zaštitne funkcije policije treba posmatrati i odnos policijskih službenika prema svom poslu. Policijski službenici svoj posao obično ne doživljavaju samo kao obavezu koju moraju ispunjavati radi lične i porodične egzistencije. To je za njih način i stil života za koji su se spremali, obučavali i/ili obrazovali. U tom smislu, neki su policiju upoređivali sa „sektom“ koja, kao svoju misiju, vidi borbu protiv kriminaliteta i haosa u društvu.
