Stefan Elezović, PhD candidate in Sociology, FROM THE INDIVIDUAL TO THE ALGORITHMIC OBJECT

Pogledi

Modern society is facing challenges brought on by the rapid development of digital technologies. Digital technology has become an inseparable part of social interaction, a key component of social inclusion, and, it seems, a decisive factor in shaping the perception of objectivity.

People now understand reality through the lens of digital media. However, such understanding does not necessarily imply a broader cognitive framework, nor a more informed approach to evaluating and comprehending social phenomena and processes. Algorithms select, shape, and deliver information based on our previous interactions and preferences, rendering the contemporary individual a subject of an information vacuum. Algorithmic determination of what is relevant to an individual leads to a narrowing of one’s worldview and ultimately undermines a fuller understanding of reality. The very question of objectivity in the digital era is not merely technical—it is deeply philosophical.
